Understanding Web Hosting Resources

When you survey the web hosting world, you’ll encounter a lot of techno-babble and sometimes find it’s hiding some rude lies. It’s true that hosting’s not simple, but offering fluffy accessories and shiny distractions doesn’t help anyone. We explain more about the other issues in our FAQ section, but for now, let’s focus on the variables that matter most.

A Racing Car with little fuel

A Web Hosting Company may offer a great price on an account with heaps of storage space, memory, and CPU. However, they may not tell you they keep IO, IOPS, and Entry Processes set to low levels. Which gives you the appearance of huge resources with the inability to use them.

How much Storage Space could you need?

The average size of websites is arguably increasing over time, and averages are a terrible way to assess your storage needs. An average basic WordPress Website installs to about 70MB! However, once you have installed Themes, plugins, and other add-ons it could come to 250MB or more! Once populated with products an eCommerce website can easily go over 10GB (that’s over 10,000MB)

Storage

The size of your website in either the amount of files or total size of your files combined.

Memory

Memory is temporary storage the server uses to hold information that isn't being processed right away but will be soon.

CPU

The CPU is what loads the files of your website. The more CPU cores you have the faster it loads under stress.

I/O

The total throughput at which your account will Read/Write data. It's measured in Megabytes per second.

IOPS

Determines the total number of read/write operations your hosting server will allow per second.

Entry Processes

This is the number of simultainious connections per second to your website at once.
